Srinagar, (DD): In a rare and intense heatwave, Srinagar on Friday recorded a scorching maximum temperature of 37.4°C, marking the highest July temperature in the city since 1953 and the third highest ever recorded in July since 1892, according to official data.

This exceptional spike in temperature comes amid an ongoing heatwave sweeping across the Kashmir Valley, with residents experiencing unusually hot and dry weather conditions. The heat has not only affected daily life but has also raised concerns about water scarcity and increased electricity demand in the region.

Weather officials attribute the extreme temperature to a prolonged dry spell and absence of significant Western Disturbances, which typically bring respite during summer months.

The all-time highest July temperature for Srinagar remains 38.3°C, recorded in July 1946, followed closely by 37.8°C in July 1953.

Authorities have advised people, especially the elderly and children, to stay hydrated, avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours, and take necessary precautions(DD)
