Pahalgam,(DD)A horrifying gun attack marred the serenity of Pahalgam’s famed Baisaran meadows on Monday afternoon, leaving five tourists injured in what authorities have described as a terror strike. The victims, part of a sightseeing group visiting the popular highland destination known as “Mini Switzerland,” were fired upon by suspected militants.
Eyewitnesses recounted scenes of panic and chaos as gunshots rang out without warning. One of the tourists suffered a critical head wound, while four others sustained injuries to their limbs. The suddenness of the attack and the remote, hilly terrain made evacuation efforts particularly challenging.
Security forces rushed to the site, securing the area and initiating a search operation to track down the assailants. The meadows, accessible only by foot or horseback, are a major attraction for visitors seeking panoramic views and peaceful treks—making the violence all the more shocking.
Officials have condemned the attack in the strongest terms. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha assured that those responsible would be brought to justice, stating, “This cowardly act against innocent tourists is an attack on peace and hospitality. We will not allow such elements to destabilise our region.”
An investigation is underway, and heightened security has been ordered in and around key tourist zones in south Kashmir. The incident has sparked concerns over visitor safety just as the region was witnessing a steady revival in tourism.(DD)
