Kupwara,(DD)In a significant breakthrough, security forces unearthed a terrorist hideout in the dense Kalaroos area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, recovering a cache of arms and explosives believed to be part of a major terror plot.
The recovery was made during a three-day joint search operation conducted by the Border Security Force (BSF), Indian Army, and Jammu and Kashmir Police (JKP). Acting on specific intelligence, the security forces zeroed in on a natural stony cave used by terrorists as a hideout.
On August 4, the joint team discovered the concealed cave and recovered a cache of war-like stores, including:
12 Chinese-made hand grenades
One Chinese pistol along with ammunition
A Kenwood radio communication set
An Urdu-language IED manual
Multiple fire sticks (used for ignition and explosives preparation)
Officials said the timely recovery of these items has likely foiled a nefarious plan by terrorists to carry out attacks in the region. “The seizure of grenades and an IED manual points to an intention to execute high-impact attacks. The joint operation has prevented potential loss of life and disruption,” a senior officer involved in the operation said.
The Kalaroos area, located close to the Line of Control (LoC), has historically been used by terrorist groups for infiltration and concealment due to its rugged terrain and thick forest cover. This latest recovery reaffirms the persistent threat posed by cross-border terror networks attempting to revive militancy in the region.
The use of Chinese-origin weapons and communication devices such as the Kenwood radio set also indicates possible external support and sophisticated logistical planning by the terrorists.
Security forces have intensified patrolling and search operations across Kupwara following this recovery. Senior officers confirmed that the area has been thoroughly sanitized and that further searches are underway to trace any remaining operatives or additional caches.
The successful operation highlights the high level of coordination between the BSF, Army, and Jammu and Kashmir Police in counter-terror efforts. It also underscores the continuing vigilance of security agencies to thwart any attempt to destabilize the region ahead of upcoming national events.
Authorities have appealed to local residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity in their surroundings.(DD)
