This public now watches everything live!

Democracy is truly tested within the walls of legislative assemblies, where the voice of the people is heard through their elected representatives and the future course of society is shaped. A legislative house is not merely a forum for passing laws; it is a reflection of public emotions, collective aspirations, and democratic maturity. Therefore, the sanctity of the House, the dignity of its proceedings, and the language used by its members are not matters of formality alone, but a shared moral responsibility. Members of the legislature are expected to express even the sharpest differences of opinion with restraint and respect so that the House may emerge as a model democratic institution—not only for the country, but for the world at large.

Unfortunately, reality often falls short of this ideal. Trivial issues are stretched to such an extent that genuine public concerns are pushed to the margins. What begins as a debate grounded in logic and policy frequently descends into personal attacks, verbal duels, and an atmosphere of confrontation. The tendency to respond to every provocation with equal or greater aggression erodes the very spirit of democratic dialogue. Language that is refined, courteous, and thoughtful can guide society like a beacon; but when the same language is reduced to mudslinging and humiliation, its negative impact extends far beyond the House and seeps into the wider social fabric.

It is equally ironic that in meetings of the Business Advisory Committee, members across party lines often display wisdom, patience, and unanimity in pledging to allow the House to function smoothly. Yet, once proceedings begin, a single slip of the tongue by any member is enough to trigger widespread disorder. Almost everyone appears to stumble over that one word, and the focus shifts entirely away from the agenda at hand. This not only wastes precious legislative time but also damages public trust in democratic institutions.

The present era has further heightened the responsibility of legislators. Assembly proceedings are now broadcast live, social media amplifies every moment, and smartphones in every hand ensure that developments in the House reach citizens instantly. Whether in villages or cities, in plains or mountains, people are fully informed and closely watching. The old phrase that “the public knows everything” has evolved into a far more immediate reality: the public now sees everything live and forms opinions in real time.

In such circumstances, every word spoken on the floor of the House carries weight. Each gesture and reaction contributes to shaping public perception—not just of individual members, but of the entire institution. Respecting the sanctity of the Assembly, being sensitive to public emotions, and genuinely representing the aspirations of the people are essential if democracy is to deliver its promised dividends. The ongoing budget session, funded by the public exchequer, is a public trust, and every moment of it belongs to the people.

Democracy is not merely about numbers or majority rule; it is about tolerance, dialogue, and dignity. If the Assembly upholds these values, they will resonate throughout society. The need of the hour is for legislators to transform disagreement into constructive debate, to use language as a bridge rather than a weapon, and to shape the Assembly into a truly exemplary institution—one that commands public respect and offers the world a living example of democratic ideals.DD
