Western Disturbance to Bring Heavy Rain & Snow in J&K From Oct 4–7; MET Issues Advisory

Srinagar: DD,The Indian Metereological Department Srinagar office has has issued a weather advisory, warning of a significant Western Disturbance expected to affect Jammu & Kashmir and adjoining areas from October 4, 2025.

According to the advisory issued by MET ocfice Srinagar, communicated to Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Jammu, widespread light to moderate rain and snowfall over higher reaches is likely from October 5 to 7, with peak activity between the night of October 5 and the morning of October 7.

The system may bring moderate to heavy snowfall in higher-altitude regions including Anantnag–Pahalgam, Kulgam, Sinthan Pass, Shopian, Pir Ki Gali, Sonamarg–Zojila, Bandipora–Razdan Pass, Gulmarg, and Kupwara–Sadhna Pass, while light snow is expected in middle reaches.

The plains of Kashmir division are likely to receive moderate to heavy rain, whereas isolated areas in Jammu division could witness heavy to very heavy downpours, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, hailstorms, and strong winds reaching 40–50 km/h, gusting up to 60–70 km/h.

Authorities have warned of possible disruption in surface transport, including movement along the Jammu–Srinagar and Srinagar–Leh National Highways, as well as other key routes in hilly and mountainous regions.

The advisory also cautions about the risk of landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones in vulnerable stretches, especially in slope-prone areas.

Farmers have been advised to halt agricultural operations between October 5 and 7, to prevent crop damage and ensure safety.

With the likelihood of rising water levels in rivers, local streams, and possible waterlogging in low-lying areas, residents and travelers have been urged to exercise caution.

The advisory has been issued for public awareness and necessary precautionary measures, officials said. (KNC)
